A residential development for a single 4 bedroom dwelling, with integral double garage and associated groundworks on a well landscaped site, within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just off Roman Road in the small village of Kilmington, in East Devon.
Site boundaries to the east and west are both lined with mature deciduous trees, and with the site sloping up from the Roman Road entrance the site offers fantastic views of the AONB.
The dwelling was carefully sited to be sensitive to its environment, and positioned away from the tree canopies to prevent damage to the roots during excavation. The dwelling has a crucifix form with the garage to the east orientated at a 45 degree angle, in order to minimise its impact on the road elevation of the property. Although single storey properties are usual for the area, first floor accommodation was included within the roofspace to take maximum advantage of the views.
The external appearance and materials provide a rural vernacular and the dwelling has the look of a ‘farmhouse’ or a converted barn, with the use of handmade bricks and the feature gable projections of the living room and the garden room clad in dark brown shiplap weatherboarding to provide a contrast.
The proposed scheme is sympathetic to the character and appearance of the area in terms of design and local distinctiveness and is entirely in keeping with the natural beauty of the AONB.
