A residential development of six houses for Magna Housing Association to meet the need for low cost/affordable housing in the small East Devon village of Hawkchurch.
The development is located on an ‘exception’ site, with the farmland provided free by a local farmer, and is outside the local development plan for Hawkchurch. The scheme design is a continuation of the 'ribbon development', which exists in Downash Lane, and with the houses designed in a rural vernacular style. The properties are short in depth to enable maximum access to the open countryside views from the rear and allow steep pitched traditional roofs, without the roof dominating the buildings. Elements of random stonework have been included to provide relief to the rendered facades.
Existing hedge-bank and trees retained where possible, to maintain the rural aspects. The vehicular access to the site has been provided by a 'dual entrance' to avoid large turning areas in the site and restrict breaking through the existing hedge-bank too often.
The development has been well received by everyone in the village and provides well needed affordable housing in a traditional rural vernacular style which is sympathetic to the local environment.
