The two directors, John Thorn and Kevin Flowers, had worked together for a number of years prior to establishing their own practice, TFQ Architects in November 1994, which is now based at Armada House, Topsham, on the outskirts of Exeter.

Early work included the complete refurbishment of Broomford Manor for Noel and Helen Edmonds. The large Manor House had been left empty for many years and TFQ were able to return this neglected Victorian property back to the vision of the original architect George Devey. Since overseeing approximately £3M of refurbishment works to the Manor House and estate buildings, TFQ have continued working on various projects throughout the Broomford estate.

From this beginning TFQ have concentrated on expanding their client base within the areas of their particular expertise. Education works have figured prominently, with projects for Devon, Cornwall and Wiltshire County Councils, Exeter C E Diocese, Plymouth R C Diocese, and the Governing Bodies of a number of Foundation and Voluntary Aided Schools in the Devon area, as well as many Colleges of Further Education. More recently the practice has been appointed by many county schools in Devon, Cornwall and Wiltshire to act on their behalf now these schools control large amounts of devolved and initiative funding direct from the DfES.

With most of these projects, TFQ work closely with School Governors and Head Teachers, to prepare development plans, and then progressively action these within the financial constraints and/or the available grant aid funding.

TFQ are particularly active in the residential sector, handling a large variety of projects from grand 'one-off' bespoke properties, to apartment buildings, barn conversions, estate developments, residential care homes, special needs homes and social housing projects. Extensions and refurbishment projects, including work on listed buildings feature alongside the new build construction.

In addition, TFQ have been involved with a variety of other project types including the design of a National Veterinary Training Centre at Bicton College of Agriculture, a 55 bedroom hotel at Woodbury Park Hotel and Golf Club, various infrastructure works for Water Authorities, a regional stores building for The National Trust, various 'Lottery' funded projects in the community sector, and many more demonstrating the broad base needed for a successful practice operating throughout the south west area.

TFQ Architects are a team of experienced professional consultants who can tailor a service specifically for their individual client’s needs in order to provide quality sustainable design at competitive rates. For the future, TFQ Architects look to further expand their client base and will continue to adapt and enhance their range of services in order to maintain a professional architectural service for all their existing and new clients.
